Associate Pastor for Youth and Families

Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me..” Matthew 25:40

Our youth ministry programs continued to focus on Mission, locally and globally, as a way to connect our faith in Jesus Christ with how we live in the world. The Senior High group focused on serving meals at SOME four times a year, the Superbowl of Caring, volunteering at SERVE and WFCM as part of the 30-hour famine, and the Christmas Party at SERVE. The Middle School students joined the high schoolers for the 30 Hour famine and SERVE Christmas party, as well as doing the Bottles of Hope project to support people with cancer. Club 56 focused on the Tumaini Orphanage coin collection, putting together School Kits through Church World Service, and the fleece blanket project for SERVE. These activities were part of our youth’s mission and outreach, but they were also opportunities for us to learn more about the needs of our world and our communities.

I continued to help lead the Club 56 program that meets monthly, working with Kimberly Davis in the spring and Faith Angrove in the fall. Some of our highlights included bowling, a pool party at the Zazzeros, Clifton Day, and a movie and craft day at Faith Angrove’s house. I also led the Middle School Madness with Jeanine Wrightson and the Senior High group with a variety of parent volunteers. In the Senior Highs, we focused on worship leading up to our Youth Sunday, establishing an annual tradition of having our graduating seniors help deliver the message. With the Middle Schoolers, we had a lock-in before Middle School Sunday. For both of these services, the youth wrote the prayers and learned about how a service is put together. We also continued to attend the Middle School Retreat and added a High School Retreat as well.

In family Christian formation, we enjoyed the beginning of the BLAST program, with programs for children led by me and Leslie Peterman, and classes for the adults by Mary Wright and Bonnie Davis. We had eighteen children and ten adults for the 10-week program, and we look forward to continuing this program each winter. We did two new family programs for the liturgical year, a “Walk Through Holy Week” during Lent, and an Advent Festival. Both of these were intergenerational Christian education events. We also had another Easter celebration as well as a large Vacation Bible School.

In Sunday School, the youth began using the Akaloo program, as well as Talk Sheets and special bible lessons. The middle school used a special program called “Wild Truths” about Jesus Christ especially for this age group. We continued to have two education opportunities for children during the 11:00 a.m. service, Junior Church and JC4Me.

I have continued working with the Christian Education committee and our new Elder, Trish Robertson. I have also enjoyed my first year of ordination and the increasing worship responsibilities of participating in communion and baptisms.

I also enjoyed my summer maternity leave and all the support from the staff and members during that time and in my transition back to my regular hours.
