Fellowship and Outreach Committee

The Fellowship and Outreach Committee is responsible for reaching out in the community to welcome new members and to assist in orienting members into the church. The committee also supports fellowship groups that meet throughout the year.

Two classes were held in 2007 to orient new members to Clifton Presbyterian Church. These classes include a presentation of the history of the Presbyterian Church, a discussion of our beliefs, the activities of the Clifton Presbyterian Church, and an orientation to personal and corporate worship. Eight new members were welcomed into the church after attending these classes.

We offered the year-long “Disciple Class” Bible Studies in the evening. The class met on Monday evenings and enjoyed fellowship with lite refreshments provided by members of the class. This class was led by Bonnie Davis, Pastoral Assistant. It was the first time the full year “Disciple Class” was offered in the evening to provide an alternative to the day time Discipleship classes. Seven to eight regular attendees participated throughout the year.

Additional Adult Education and Fellowship were offered during the newly created Evening BLAST (Bible Learning and Spiritual Living) program. BLAST provided an opportunity to eat dinner together and participate in intergenerational fellowship mid week for pre-K to our oldest adults. Two courses were offered for adults, “Serious Answers to Hard Questions” views from 10 theologians confronting 10 challenges to faith, led by Pastoral Assistant Bonnie Davis and a parenting class called “The Biggest Job,” led by Mary and Jim Wright. Eight to ten attendees participated in the education/fellowship.

The OWLS (Older Wiser Livelier Seniors) has continued to meet on the second Monday every month for luncheons, lectures and travel log trips. This year, there were lectures on Using Information Technology in the Home, Dr Michael Carrington, Assistant Professor at Northern Virginia Community College and from Fairfax County Office of Aging, Michelle Miller, and more. They saw Thoroughly Modern Mille performed at Robinson Secondary School, and visited the Fairfax City museum and Blenheim House. The outreach for this group has been overseen by both Bonnie Davis, Pastoral Assistant and Pastor Lynn. The 2007 OWLS group consists of 10-15 regular members.

The Book Club, which is open to men and women of the church, met on the second Thursday of the month for most of the year to discuss books chosen by the group. The wide range of books discussed by the group included Snowflower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See, Shadow Divers, by Robert Kurson, The Color of Water, by James McBride, Rounding the Horn, by Dallas Murphy, The March, by E.L. Doctorow, and Cold Sassy Tree, by Olive Ann Burns. Twelve to fifteen members regularly meet.
